Run in the shoes of our marathon man and full stack software developer Dimitar

You just have to know Dimitar Genov. He is a real marathon man who understands the intricate connection between coding and running, between mathematics and music. Turning into a fundamental piece of the Devision office in Sofia as a front-end/back-end developer, right after graduating at the Technical University of Plovdiv as a Master of Computer Systems and Technologies eight years ago, was a natural step for Dimitar. Because everything he does seems to come out naturally, just as he became a really good guitar player and a marathon runner.

His passion, dedication and combining talents with hard work are the epitome of what our company strives to be. So get to know Dimitar and you will find out exactly what Devision represents.

What is your role at Devision?

My role at Devision as a software engineer is taking active part in a dedicated team. It is responsible for back-end and front-end implementation of supporting applications and implementing new features. I also participate in daily or weekly meetings with colleagues from all around the world. This gives me the chance to build rapport with people with different backgrounds – from Asia to Europe – and expands my horizons both as a person and as a specialist.

My spare projects are related to analyzing some running data and create AI algorithms. They can predict performance or coaching based on running information from smart watches like pace, elevation, heart rate, cadence, etc. I love spending time on these types of projects since I consider myself a dedicated runner and I truly understand the value of my work in this area.

Why did you join Devision and what has kept you there?

It just was the natural thing for me to do if you look at my development as a pathway. The first step was graduating in the Trade High School where I have been learning some economy, accountancy and maths. This led me to my next step which was the Technical University in Plovdiv where my specialty was Computer Systems and Technologies.

So the final and most logical step was joining Devision right after I graduated the Plovdiv Tech eight years ago. The main thing that’s keeping me here is the simultaneous growth of both the company and I and seeing further improvement down the road on both fronts. When I joined, Devision was a small company but it keeps growing all the time by following the most recent and modern technologies and by implementing them in the software development process and in our products.

There is another reason I find myself at home here. It is the working environment and the combination of professional and friendly relations between all the colleagues. We are all very different but we appreciate one another inside and outside the office.

What do you like most about Devision?

First and foremost, the freedom. It is an absolute must to feel free to express yourself at a 100% in order to be able to fulfill your true potential and this company gives you the right platform. The other benefit of this freedom is being flexible with the time given to you so that you can combine the job with your activities outside of work.

I already spoke about my colleagues but here is the time and place to mention that I respect them when we are at the office but I love them outside of it. We share the same hobbies: we play football once-a-week, we go for a paintball session from time to time, and we organize tennis mini-tournaments. So I enjoy the perfect balance between professional and friendly relations with all at Devision.

Do you have any hobbies, go-to weekend activities, or long-term passion projects you’re working on?

In terms of collective sports, I already mentioned football as a big interest of mine. But I also enjoy individual exercising. I absolutely love running: I run in the park every time I get the chance and I even take part in different marathons and triathlons whenever possible.

Running makes me more focused and persistent in my job, just as music helps me see how the universe mathematically connects all dots. Yes, I love playing guitar and it is more than just a hobby to me. I even teach guitar to my daughter as I do with a lot of other things related to sports, education and life in general – it is the most pleasant duty a person can have.

What is the next life milestone you want to achieve?

Become a father of two. Having another kid to bring joy and hope to me and the world is a worthy milestone, isn’t it? Plus, the bigger the family, the merrier.

When are you the happiest?

Helping my family or friends solve a problem that is troubling them. This is a quality I also translate to my work at Devision. My mathematical mind and my human solidarity are the main drivers behind it, I guess.

Another marathon, another top finish for the always driven for success Dimitar

If you were stuck on an island, what three things would you bring?

First of all, as you are not allowed to bring a person, I would take my guitar. Playing different tunes and singing would help bring back memories of my beloved people and get my spirit higher in bad times.

Secondly, I would have the book “Robinson Crusoe” with me. It gives great ideas about surviving in such circumstances and provides consolation when you are feeling down and all alone in the universe. Its philosophy would be a perfect fundament to keep my humanity intact.

And thirdly, a boat. Just in case I’d like to something stupid like, you know, escape…

What’s your favorite movie and line from a movie?

“Any given Sunday” is my all-time favorite movie and Al Pacino’s locker room speech really inspires me. It could serve as a huge motivator in all walks of life and not only in football. Because the idea that you always have to give your best and be a dedicated part of a team could be applied everywhere.

What’s your favorite book and line from a book?

“Clean code” by Robert C. Martin, a.k.a Uncle Bob, and I have a couple of lines that I like a lot from there. The first one is: “Clean code always looks like it was written by someone who cares.” And the second one says: “Later equals never.”
